Food type: Mexican Average entrée price: $7 Credit cards: None (cash only) Famous dish: Carne asada tacos
In an area jammed with cheap taco joints, just deciding where to have lunch could take longer than the meal itself. Not to worry — the residents of the Mission District have unofficially crowned La Taqueria as the best among them.
It's all simple fare, like tacos, quesadillas and burritos, but there's something about the way they spice it here that stands out. Some go for the carne asada soft tacos, delicious with avocado, or a burrito filled with chicken, grilled beef, or pork.
Wash it all down an with agua fresca, a refreshing, fruity drink that comes in tamarind, melon or strawberry; or a cool and creamy horchata, a rice and cinnamon drink.
The whitewashed mission exterior is easy to spot, and you won't miss the loud Mexican music pouring out of the jukebox. Once you're inside, get up to the counter to order. It's a strictly no-frills approach. |
