A Buffet at the Top of the World
Twenty-four stories above elegant Nob Hill, the Fairmont Hotel offers a nightly dinner buffet with prime rib, salmon, a fresh seafood bar, cheeses and salads, all with a gorgeous 360 degree view of San Francisco. Summer's late sunsets are tempered by the city's famous fog, making for an unforgettable twilight view, but it's beautiful any time of year.
The buffet is set up into several stations — meats, salads, cold seafood, cold meats and antipasti, a full Chinese section, and desserts — and decorated with plenty of fresh flowers.
The main course is the prime rib table, near the center of the buffet; and a row of main dishes that change regularly. The night we were there, these included salmon and sea bass in a creamy chive sauce; baked chicken with shiitake mushrooms; pasta primavera; pepper steak; and roasted pork loin. Salads include hearts of palm and chicken vinaigrette; couscous; mesclun greens with pine nuts and a cold tortelloni salad.
There is also a choice of antipasti (roasted Italian vegetables and an array of thin-sliced meats); fresh fruit; a cold seafood bar with shrimp, smoked salmon and mussels on the half shell; and a cheese board. Desserts might include a layered raspberry mousse torte, pecan pie, mango mousse, tiny fruit tarts, soft chocolate eclairs, or a rich chocolate mousse cake, depending on the whims of the pastry chef. The price of $36.50 includes coffee, tea or milk.
Sunday mornings, the Crown Room changes its character. Sunlight fills the room through huge windows, and the view of San Francisco Bay is now brilliant blue water, dozens of boats, an ever-changing cloudscape and green and gold hills. The brunch buffet price of $38.50 includes unlimited refills of Perrier-Jouet champagne, making it one of the city's most popular Sunday morning destinations for both tourists and locals. |
